ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A HALLMARK OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION. Seton continues that tradition. Our students consistently excel in intellectual achievements. Looking ahead, we are instilling in our children the desire to be lifelong learners. Intellectual curiosity and ability are, and will be, essential to personal and professional growth.

Another legacy that makes a Catholic Education unique is the blend of academic excellence with spiritual formation. The values and teaching of the Catholic Church-faith in word and deed-are an integral part of the curriculum. An awareness of God's personal love for them enables our children to comprehend what life is truly about.

FACULTY AND STAFF

Seton's teachers are the very soul of the school. They are creative, energetic, skilled and experienced. They create a loving environment while reinforcing the positive influence of your home. They are dedicated to helping each child excel intellectually and spiritually. All of Seton's teachers are New York State certified, and over two-thirds hold advanced degrees. They are supported by the principal, learning specialist, school nurse, and office staff.

Seton also benefits from the dedicated involvement and support of our host parish, Our Lady of Lourdes. The pastor of Lourdes and other local pastors often visit the school and participate actively in special liturgies and religious instruction.

Everyone at Seton considers the enrollment of your child to be a sacred trust.

ACADEMICS AND ENRICHMENT

Seton's curriculum meets the requirements of the Diocesan Catholic Schools Office and exceeds those set by the New York State Education Department. Seton is blessed with rich programs in art, computing, handwriting, science and health, language arts, math, music, physicial education, reading, religion, social studies, and spelling. We are particularly proud of our literature-based program which combines phonics with whole language.

While Kindergartners use bar graphs to visually express their new counting skills, older students tackle the math of the stock market and the precise measurements demanded by geometric artwork. Children explore social studies and science by recreating frontier life and work and play during Pioneer Day. Students re-enact life in ancient Greece of medieval Europe through plays and skits.

Visiting school programs enhance the daily curricula. The children have enjoyed an inflatable planetarium, reptile shows, visiting authors, and "The Young Audiences Program" brings regional artists to the school. Our belief is that through fascination and inspiration, ordinary education becomes extraordinary.

Children have daily religious instruction to assist them in forming their own spiritual selves and core beliefs. This is also extended to the Church and Community; outreach projects engage the students in many forms. There is an annual sixth grade project that includes the creation and sale of items to collect money for local charities. An annual third-grade project provides donated nonperishable goods to those in need. Students also support overseas missions and national fundraising efforts including "Pennies for Patients." Special liturgical celebrations punctuate the school year and students take active roles as liturgy planners, lectors, and cantors.

At Seton, individual attention nurtures the full development of each student. Daily homework instills disciplined work habits. Remedial assistance is available in both reading and math.

Children in Grades 3 to 6 are tested in major academic subjects twice yearly. Our students also participate each year in national standardized tests. Selected grades take the New York State tests in January and June. Student performance on these tests is consistent and very strong.

LIBRARY

The Jean Collins, SSJ Memorial Library welcomes students and parents whenever school is in session. Staffed by the school librarian and parent volunteers, it is a place where book selection, library skills and storytelling encourage a love for reading. For one week each year, the library hosts a Book Fair sponsored by the Parents' Association. Proceeds from the sale benefit the library.

COMPUTER LAB AND INSTRUCTION

Students from Grades 1-6 meet weekly in our computer lab which is equipped with 70 computers with updated hardware and software. The computer lab instructor introduces keyboarding skills, instructional games, and word processing. Each classroom is also equipped with at least 3 to 4 computers for daily use. Kindergartners receive computer instruction in their own classrooms.

MUSIC AND ART

Each week students participate in Art and Music classes following the New York State Fine Art Standards. The children anticipate the Christmas concert, with its festive music and sense of occasion, as a highlight of their year. The Spring Festival showcases both music and art accomplishments. Seton offers individual instruction in piano, wind, string, and percussion instruments for an additional fee.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORTS

All students enjoy physical education twice a week. Seton has an outdoor fenced-in recreation area for use during recess and during physical education classes which provides a safe area on which to play. Visits by local trainers including martial arts and Pilates instructors enrich the physical education program. In addition, field trips including bowling and visits to professional sports fields piques student's interest in athletics and sport.

Sports offered after school include basketball (Grades 3-6) and soccer (Grades 4-6).
